In a press conference on Wednesday — their third held since the election — the Harris County GOP suggested a special oversight committee for elections, a request Harris County Democratic Party Chair Odus Evbagharu calls “redundant” and “hype designed to create unwarranted fear about our election process.”

A committee already exists to provide elections oversight," Evbagharu said. "The Harris County Elections Committee — made up of both party chairs, the county judge, the county clerk, and the county tax assessor — is designed to provide direction and supervision over elections held in Harris County.

Two Candidates File for District 147 Special Election

Special Election for District 147

Two candidates, Danielle Keys Bess and Jolanda Jones will face each other in the May 7 Special Election for Texas House District seat 147, formerly held by Rep. Garnet Coleman. The winner of the Special Election will serve as the HD 147 Representative through the end of former Representative Coleman’s term on January 10, 2023.


TDP, HCDP Hold Press Conference to Address Repeated Republican Attacks on Voting Rights

HCDP and TDP held a joint press conference on March 3 to address Republican attacks on voting rights in Texas following the primary election on March 1. HCDP Chair Odus Evbagharu and TDP Chair Gilberto Hinojosa were joined by a group of Democratic legislators and party officials to discuss the negative effects Texas is already seeing from the Republican engineered anti-voting bill, Senate Bill 1, that passed just over 3 months ago on January 1.

Beto O’Rourke Wins Democratic Candidacy for Texas Governor

Beto O'Rourke Democratic Nominee for Texas Governor

 

Beto O’Rourke won the March 1 Democratic primary race for Texas Governor by a landslide last Tuesday. O’Rourke, who has maintained a steady lead throughout the Primary campaign season is now tasked with unseating incumbent Republican candidate, Greg Abbott in the general election on November 8.

Women’s Commission Creation Approved by Harris County Commissioners Court

Women's Commission to Be Formed in Harris County

Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee’s proposal to create a Harris County Women’s Commission was approved by Commissioners Court on March 8. The Women’s Commission will conduct research, engage with the community, and make recommendations to the Commissioners Court related to economic opportunities and health outcomes of women in Harris County.

“The Harris County Women’s Commission will research and identify inequities, identify gender disparities in county institutions, and engage in community participation to work toward a more equitable county,” said Menefee in a statement.

Q1 CEC!

The 2022 Q1 CEC will be held in person on Thursday, March 24, at 7 PM at the IBEW Local 716 building. Those who are unable to attend can watch from wherever they might be via the HCDP YouTube livestream.

HCDP 2022 Road Show

In 2019, HCDP went to 8 different State House districts to reach out to Democrats around Harris County. We had over 100 participants, many who had not been engaged before but were ready to start mobilizing for 2020. By bringing in new people, as well as activating volunteers already working in those neighborhoods, we expanded our capabilities and reach. We hosted canvasses and phone banks for each House District we visited as well — and were able to call over 15,000 voters and knock over 6,000 doors.

This year, we would like to go even bigger, and would be grateful for your participation and support for these outreach events! We plan to have training, lunch, and have the House District Candidate share a few words with the volunteers. Then immediately after, go out and canvass for the district!

The results are in for the drawing for ballot order for contested Precinct Chair races! Candidates for 11 of the Harris County Precinct Chair positions traveled to HCDP HQ to draw their ballot order for the March 24 election.
