Show Support for the Texas House Democrats Fighting Voter Suppression

Stand with our Texas Democrats

Texas Democrats left the state this week to prevent the State House from having enough members to pass restrictive voting legislation that was being fast-tracked by GOP legislators. The push by Republicans to pass a bill that would ban drive-thru and 24-hour voting and add other restrictions forced state Democrats to break quorum, with most heading to Washington, D.C. While there, they are advocating for two voting rights bills: the For The People Act and The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

We stand with the Texas Democrats who are doing everything to ensure everyone in our state has an equal right to vote. Show your support for them on Facebook and Twitter.

Action Alert: Swing TX Left ‘Model’ Community-Building Block Walk in Spring Branch

Spring TX Left Block Walk

Join Swing TX Left for a "model" community-building block walk in Spring Branch on Saturday, July 17, from 9 to 11 AM. This is a friendly mini-block walk that will provide training on the community-building approach to organizing.

Learn why community-building walks are important to Democrats' success and how you can use them in your precinct or area. After a short training session, we’ll knock doors in teams of two for an hour, and then come back to share our experiences with each other.

This training is open to anyone that would like to try block walking for the first time, learn to launch their own block walks, or share their knowledge about block walking with others.

Hervis Rogers Headlines

From New Republic: “If (Hervis) Rogers’s case is meant to be proof that voter fraud is a genuine scourge in American elections, it’s not very persuasive.

If anything, his situation underscores the pernicious ways Texas and other states obstruct voters from participating in American democracy.”

HCDP Volunteer Highlights: Jean Thomas & Sylvia Pitre

HCDP Volunteer Highlights

Jean Thomas decided to volunteer when Barack Obama was running for president. “I felt the excitement, and I wanted — and needed — to help.”

A South Carolina native who has lived in Texas for 36 years, Thomas retired after working as a flight attendant for Pan Am and Delta.

“Volunteering for HCDP gives me the opportunity to help our voters, while enjoying being among like-minded folk,” she said.

When Sylvia Pitre retired from General Electric in 2007, she decided to volunteer for HCDP. “I was a precinct chair and an election judge, and I wanted to get even more involved.

“Working with a friendly staff gave me motivation and comfort. I learned a lot, answering phones, talking to people, helping people and working on special projects,” said Pitre. “I like meeting candidates and elected officials.

“My experience as a volunteer has motivated me to become more active in my community and church. I look forward to an interesting day each week.”

Happy Eid-Al-Adha to Everyone Who Celebrates

Happy Eid Al-Adha

HCDP sends Eid greetings to all who celebrate. Eid al-Adha is a public holiday in many Middle Eastern countries. This year, it will be observed on July 20 in most countries, depending on the sighting of the moon. The holiday marks the end of the Hajj, or the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, which is one of the five pillars of Islam.
