Conservative Columnist Promotes Bail Reform to Avoid Jailing No-Risk Defendants Simply Because of ‘Their Inability to Pay a Costly Cash Bail’
These Reforms ‘Mirror Actions Democratic Leaders in Harris County Are Already Taking,’ Says HCDP Chair
HOUSTON – In a Fox News opinion piece published Thursday, Republican Doug Collins calls on conservatives to embrace pre-trial detention reforms designed to reduce the number of low-level defendants in jail without risking public safety. He even highlights the success of Harris County’s misdemeanor bail reform “that reduced recidivism rates while allowing prosecutors and cops to focus their energy on violent crimes.”
Harris County Democratic Party Chair Odus Evbagharu issued the following statement in response to the Fox News piece.
“It is ironic that Fox News ran an opinion piece urging Republicans to embrace efforts to reduce the number of people who are incarcerated when for so long Fox has been critical of Democratic reforms designed to do just that — reduce the number of people stuck in jail for low-level cases.
“The reforms discussed in this article mirror actions Democratic leaders in Harris County are already taking in order to lower incarceration rates while reducing crime and recidivism and saving taxpayers money.
“This article even celebrates our Harris County leaders’ efforts:
…In Harris County, Texas, a coalition of law enforcement leaders and conservative advocates — including the local Crime Stoppers — has supported a misdemeanor bail reform that reduced recidivism rates while allowing prosecutors and cops to focus their energy on violent crimes. ~ Republican Doug Collins
“It is refreshing to see a Republican leader acknowledge the need for — and success of — misdemeanor bail reform. Local GOP leaders should take note.”
