HCDP Chair Calls for Removal of Cy-Fair School Board Member
‘Not the Type of Person Who Should be on Any School Board’
HARRIS COUNTY — A newly elected Cy-Fair school board member this week linked the district’s greater percentage of black teachers to poorer student performance. GOP-backed Scott Henry’s declaration at a district meeting “should result in much more than an outcry,” said HCDP Chair Odus Evbagharu, calling for Henry’s removal from the board.
In response to Henry’s comments, Harris County Democratic Party Chair Odus Evbagharu issued the following statement:
“Mr. Henry should immediately resign or be removed from his position on the Cy-Fair School Board. His racist rhetoric is absolutely unacceptable.
“I grew up and graduated in the Cy-Fair school system, and I am appalled that Mr. Henry would flat out say something so abhorrent and disgusting. His racist attitude and political grandstanding don't reflect the diversity of our community. Mr. Henry is not the type of person who should be on the Cy-Fair — or any — school board.
“Henry’s words of racial inferiority are dangerous and damaging and just a continuation of right-wing ideology ‘saying the quiet part out loud.’ It’s a reflection of the wave of classroom censorship and leaving behind minority students that is sweeping the country in every level of government. We should not be silent. We must demand more from our elected officials to ensure every student is being educated by a diverse coalition of quality teachers.
