RELEASE: Statement from HCDP on Gov. Abbott’s Executive Order Ending Mask Mandate, Lifting Restrictions that Protect Texans
“Governor Abbott’s appalling decision to lift essential public health orders designed to protect us from Covid-19 is one of the most dangerous acts we’ve seen so far from our Texas leadership. This executive order to end the mask mandate — along with lifting other restrictions that would allow 100 percent capacity in all businesses including restaurants — is a potential death sentence for thousands of Texans and will put an exorbitant amount of strain on our medical facilities.
“It was just reported that Houston is the first U.S. City to record every variant of Covid strains. In addition, Texas ranks 48th in our country’s Covid vaccination rate. This is not the time to let our guard down. The most vulnerable amongst us will suffer the greatest, because Gov. Abbott is about protecting his political agenda instead of the citizens of our state.
“We cannot allow for leadership that continues to abandon us during crises. We have said goodbye to our loved ones, huddled to keep warm during one of the most avoidable disasters in our state’s history, and now we are left to deal with the devastating effects of all these tragedies on our own.
“Gov. Abbott and the hypocritical Texas Republican leadership claim to be the party fighting to preserve American values, all the while implementing policies that directly oppose and ignore what is most needed during these difficult times. They continue stripping us of the protection and security we need to rebuild stronger economically and emotionally.
“We say, ‘No more! You are setting us back and creating another crisis from which many will not ever recover. It is no longer about politics for us, it is about protecting ourselves against you and your administration’s cruel lack of humanity and disregard for the people you serve.
“As a party we are committed to fighting these irresponsible policies and restoring the kind of leadership all Texans deserve. We are working hard to ensure Gov. Abbott and other bad politicians no longer play a role in deciding what’s best for Texas.”
