RELEASE: Harris County Democratic Party on Trump’s Bipartisan Second Impeachment

HCDP Chair Lillie Schechter issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach Donald Trump for a second time:

“This is a time in our country when our actions will define who we are as a democracy. The second impeachment of Donald Trump in a bipartisan vote led by Democrats demonstrated quick action and held Donald Trump accountable for igniting an attack on our Capitol. The violent insurrection at the capitol was an attempt by domestic terrorists to overthrow our government and overturn a free and fair election, and it was incited by the president of the United States himself. The Trump era will go down as one of the darkest times in American history, but the light of democracy will prevail because of the strength, resolve and courage of our Democratic leaders and the fortitude of who we are as a united nation.”

“The work to heal our nation’s wounds has just begun and accountability is required to move in a healthier direction. Therefore, we stand by our calling for the resignation of Senator Ted Cruz for his part in inciting the seditious and treacherous acts we witnessed on January 6th. He along with several other Texas Republicans warrant expulsion from public office and we will continue to insist that the justice department investigate all those responsible for what was one of our darkest days in U.S. History.”
